5 out of 5 stars The Queen STILL Reigns!!!!   December 24, 2009

I have been a diehard MJB fan since I can remember and once again she does not disappoint. Mary has grown into such a beautiful classy woman that its hard to believe that the same girl who was singing about heartbreak on her 1994 Album "My Life" is now singing about being proud and happy about being herself and most importantly LOVING herself. Now how many females artists of today can say that they are truly happy with themselves and really appreciate there success?

Although this Cd is very short compared to her usual 14 plus cds, every track is still worth the listen. My favorites, "The One", "I Am", "Good Love" and "Each Tear".

I really hope she keeps up with the amazing inspirational work and not sell her soul like most of these so called "cookie cutter wannabe singers". THANK MS. BLIGE FOR PUTTING OUT ANOTHER HOT RECORD!!! Im already looking for album Number 10!!!

5 out of 5 stars STRONGER WITH EACH ALBUM...   February 9, 2010

i don't know how she does it, but mary's albums get better with each release. there are those who stand by her '90s albums as her best, but i disagree--i think her '00s albums are better, and more accessible to a wider audience. mary grows and changes with the times. her music may sound more current now, but her voice has never changed. if anything, it's stronger, deeper and richer. this album is slammin' from beginning to end! work, mary!

I was really looking forward to this album, as I have been an MJB fan FOREVER! Yes, since she sang back-up for Father MC but no one knew who she was! As someone who appreciates music (I can do without the flashy costumes, superweaves, and alter-egos), I can listen to each album and tell that something different/new was going on, as your sound grew/improved as you dealt with life's challenges. While I have my favorites (411 & Share My World), I will always make room for more Mary!

One love!

5 out of 5 stars Mary Just A Little Bit Stronger   December 22, 2009

Somehow Mary J Blige has managed to keep herself very reliable in terms of quality music and maintain a connection to the all too often less than successful contemporary hip-hop R&B style. One good reason for that is that she manages to somehow make all of the qualities her music embraces, every beat and every loop become believable funk. One thing I used to get kind of confused about was her maintaing the need to have rap inserts by the biggest rappers in the biz when her own voice and production are more than enough to carry a whole album. But I also realize that is the route she took to funk. After all,who knew hip-hop would ever become so closely linked with commercialism anyway? Even so the one quality that makes this album significant is the energy level involved in all twelve songs. Not every one is a dance/funk groove either. Some of them lean more towards the 80's based sound so previlant now. The music is also quite a lot more slickly produced and less brittle than the last album Growing Pains, also a wonderful release by the way. But as always it's satisfying to see any artist worth their name growing and adapting in styles all too often thought of as rigid and inflexible. As with a lot of albums some of the songs are stronger than others of course. The opener tonight is this very strong, intensely reverbed bassy funk jam that, while it has the vocorders and "whoa whoa whoa" vocal calls of typical modern hip-hop/R&B manages to throw down as great modern funk. "The One","Said And Done" and "I Am",to me anyway come off more as filler:so obviously designed to go along with what everyone else has and continues to be doing that they never really rise to any inspiring level beyond just dancing, even if the lyrics are good. Much better than that is "I Feel Good" and "Each Tear",both of which mix a certain ethereal flavor with strong dance beats. The fantastic midtempo "I Love U" and the brilliant slow jam closer "I Can See In Color" both utilize this very bass level variety of funk (bass in the instrumental sense, not sound quality by the way) that is alternately slow grooving, enticing with just a hint of forboding. "Good Love" has some great gospel/funk horn loops and a really enthusiastic flavor that is not only spirit cleansing but uplifting at the ame time. "Hood Love" again is a bit typical in execution but the musical ideas and vocal exchanges between Mary and Trey Songz make it all worthwhile. The punchy "Kitchen" has a heavy piano thud-type hip-hop influence while Mary sing a catchy lyric metaphorically indicating what she'd do with someone interloping between her and her boyfriend. It's assertive but there's also a pleasing element of wit and humor to the affair. The only fairly typical Aretha-inspired ballad Mary throws down here is "In The Morning" and it's a really good one.Overall here we have an album that you can tell has some serious heart and passion involved and the desire to get people swept up into the power of the groove.

It's amazing when you can grow with an artist - this album shows her growth. Being there, in that place in your life when they first began. I've been a fan of MJB all her career. Just when you thought she was going to crash and burn, she rose up like a phoenix. She continues to evolve into the person God would have her to be. Thank you Mary, for putting your heart and soul into your music. You are truly a blessing to so many people. My favorite on this CD is "I can see in color."
