5 out of 5 stars Eclectic Metal   March 15, 2010

Ok - I have downloaded 5 'metal' samplers from Amazon so far (and reviewed 3 of those), and this one is the most interesting, by far, in my opinion. For my personal taste - how well I like the tracks overall - I would give it a 4. However, for its wide-ranging variety and interesting tracks... I would suppose that many of us get samplers because we are curious, not because we already know the stuff on them... So for that, this is definitely a 5 star sampler.

There are some very different (to me) and musically intriguing tracks on this one. (There are also a small few I could, personally, do without). But most are creative, 'comfort-zone-expanding', and well worth exposing your mind to. Even the ones with the stuff I don't like mostly have other things I do like. "Curiouser and curiouser," said Alice.

I would suggest you like either rock or metal or electronic or jazz, and not only folk or country, though, to start. Many tracks are a 'mix' of genres (that I am familiar with) - symphonic/deathmetal; metal/electronic; jazz/metal; I honestly don't know what to call most of them, but most are well worth a listen. I recommend it to your consideration - you may just find a brand new diamond amongst the strange here.
--------
*added - further along... the second half is closer to the heavy or death metal, I think, less 'out there', but still more 'melodic' than 'just noise' (from my point of view).

5 out of 5 stars Get it!!!   April 7, 2010

It's free people and it really is worth a listen. When it comes to this type of music there's a lot I don't like but this sampler has quite a few on it that went straight to my mp3 player.

4 out of 5 stars Broadening the horizons of metal   April 7, 2010

The main thing to keep in mind here is that these are all bands on The End label, which means they're not going to sound like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest (except for Early Man, God love 'em). The End is all about the more avant-garde doom, black, death, ambient and experimental metal bands. At the risk of sounding elitist, this is metal for grown-ups. Bands like Novembers Doom, Borknagar and Sigh all push the limits of their genres, and they're just a few of the bands showcased here.

I don't love all of the bands/songs on this sampler, but you certainly can't beat the price! If you're already a metal fan, you'll get the most out of this sampler, and if you're looking to expand your horizons and see where metal is going in the new century, this is the perfect (and free, did I mention that?) way to do so.

Decent music for free and is letting me explore unheard of bands before. Would recommend for anyone who is looking for some unheard music before.

Don't get me wrong I like free but this CD is a mix of verities of metal according to what is says. Some of these tracks should not be in the metal genre.
